Chapter 1
Vocabulary you need to know: halte - German word for stop; rucksack - a kind of backpack; Resistance - an organized underground movement in a country fighting against a foreign occupying power

*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers? Because she is little and does not know what they could do to her
*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why? I would have been scared because they could do something to her that could harm her

Chapter 2

  • Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis? Yes because they could have killed him
Why?* Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why? Yes because i will die for my country
  • What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise? Lise died in a car accident
  • How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise? They have been very sad and after Lise died when they packed up all of her stuff they havent touched it for a long time

Chapter 3
  • Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea? No I think that everybody should stand up for what they believe in
  • What religion do the Rosens practice? Jewish
  • Predict what you think will happen next in the story? Natiz's will come and look for Ellen and her family

Chapter 4

Why was it a long night? because the Natiz's came and scherched their whole house looking for Ellen and her family
  • Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie? because her family has gone to hide and Ellen has gone to hide w/ Anniemary to be safer
Chapter 5

1. Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment? Ellen and her family

3. Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck? Because it was a Jewish symbol

Chapter 6

1. What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”? Ellen or the Jews
2. Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train? because thet were afarid that Khristi would say that this is their friend Ellen
3. What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say? That they were going to back off of her would get mad I do not understand this answer.

Chapter 7

1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje? Peaceful
2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik? because this time she has to be careful and it is not that fun

Chapter 8

1. Do you agree with Annemarie that Great-aunt Birte doesn’t exist? Yes
2. What do you think Uncle Henrik means by “Tomorrow will be a day for fishing”? i think he means that tommorow will be a good day for freeing some Jews

Chapter 9

1. Do you think Annemarie is brave? Yes because by trying to save her friends life she could get killed
2. Who do you think the ‘mourners” are? Mama, Papa, and Peter They are the Jewish people who are trying to escape to Sweden.

Chapter 10
Vocabulary: typhus - a very infectious and deadly disease
1. What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”? ''he who numbers the stars one by one''
2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake? I think they felt scarid because the Natiz's could have caught them
3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket? Because she told them that the reason why their aunt died was because of typhus

Chapter 11

1. What is in the casket? blankets
2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine because when the baby woke up he could of started crying and the soldiers could have caught them
3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
because Anniemary was being brave and she was just doing what she was told
Chapter 12
1. Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers n the way to Uncle Henrik’s boat? Yes
2. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety? because she loves her mom and doesn't want anything to happen to her

Chapter 13
1. Why does Annemarie volunteer to take the packet to Uncle Henrik? because her mom has a broken leg and she would go faster than her mom becase her mom has a broken leg
2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket? because it is something important

Chapter 14
1. There is a reference to the story of Little Red Riding Hood in this chapter. Which characters from story are like Red Riding Hood and the wolf? anniemary is like Little Red Riding Hood and the soldiers are like the wolf
Chapter 15
1. What is your reaction to how the soldiers treated Annemarie? Mean, disrespectful
2. Why does Annemarie act like Kirsti? because she is trying to act like just a little girl bringing her Uncle lunch
3. Did anything Uncle Henrik tell Annemarie surprise you? What? Yes the Henkerchif

Chapter 16.
1. How does Uncle Henrik define “brave” to Annemarie? Based on this definition, is Annnemarie be considered brave? Yes because she is doing what she is told
2. What secret information does Uncle Henrik share with Annemarie about the Rosens? he tells her that he has a secret room in his boat that the Rosens are hiding in

Chapter 17
1. This chapter takes place two years later after the war. How do the Danish people include their Jewish neighbors in the celebration? They put up Jewish things and they polished their furinture when they were gone
2. How did Peter die? How did Lise really die? because they were in a secret group and the Natiz's caught them and peter got shot and Lise got run over by a tank
3. Where does Annemarie hide Ellen’s Star of David necklace? in one of Lise's old dresses She puts it in Lise's hope chest.
